Summer is finally here! Time for patios, outdoors, BBQ’d delights and afternoons at the beach! Even though sunny days and warm weather have a positive effect on morale, it’s important to remember that heat and physical activities accelerate dehydration, mainly through perspiration and where in lies the importance of staying hydrated!
We are made of mostly water. It accounts for 65% of an adult’s total weight. In fact, 75% of our brain is composed of it, 76% of our muscles, 79% of our heart and lungs and 83% of our blood.
Generally speaking, should drink at least between eight and 10 glasses of water per day, however, other factors do come into play, such as weight, ambient temperature and level of activity, especially during the summer season.
Here are a few symptoms related to dehydration that are important to be aware: Dizzy spells, headaches, confusion, extreme thirst, chest pain, shortness of breath. Not drinking enough over a long period of time can even lead to chronic medical problems like high blood pressure and kidney disease.
Below are a few ideas on how to stay hydrated:
- Drink a glass of water when your alarm clock goes off
- Eat more fruits and vegetables since food accounts for 20% of our water intake
- Drink a glass with each meal, whether it be tea, coffee, herbal teas or juice
- Drink a glass of water, before, during and after your workout sessions
- Always keep a water bottle close by for easy consumption during the day
- Add flavor to your water for more taste, such as juice from fresh citrus
Water is a substance that we can abuse without consequence, so drink up without moderation! It’s essential for feeling good, improved performance and staying healthy.
